HIGHLIGHTS: A Chronological History
of Venues and Artists I have worked with.

DISCLAIMER: This page has not been updated
in a number of years. I will do so when I have more time.
It's probably better to focus on the here and now than on the past.

The Nickname:
I got the nickname 'Michigan Mike' on November 20th, 1992. I was travelling the country in search of a new place to live and it was my first night ever in the State of Colorado. I didn't know a soul west of the Mississippi and the snow was dumping so bad on my way into Boulder that I couldn't see the mountains. At a gas station I asked for directions as to where I could catch some live music and was directed to the Pearl Street Mall area. I ran across a bar called 'J.J. McKabes' (not there anymore) and a band called 'Steak' was performing. The bar was not crowded due to the storm, so I started shooting pool with a group of five or six people... three of whom were named Mike. They also had a few other Mikes in their clan of friends... each of whom had a nickname to distinguish who was who. Being fresh out of Michigan I instantly became 'Michigan' Mike. I was out of my car for less than two hours before getting the moniker!

The Dark Horse
Boulder, CO - December 1992 thru March 1993
My first job in Colorado was as a DJ at The Darkhorse. I played standard party music on Thursdays and Saturdays for a while, and then initiated a Grateful Dead Bootleg Night on Tuesday nights.

Leftover Salmon - Colorado to California to Michigan and back.
Un-Official, Part-Time Videographer, Photographer, Taper, Archivist - November 1993 thru December 1995
I was turned-on to LoS shortly after moving to Colorado and quickly became a HUGE fan. I found myself doing a lot of unofficial stuff to try and help out in those early days. I had the fortune to videotape their first Telluride Bluegrass Fest performance in '95 (standing in the rain on a lawn chair in the 2nd row) and also videotaped most of that '95 summer tour, including the High Sierra Music Festival w/ interviews with VH-1 and a lot more. Sadly, the videocamera and most of the tapes were stolen from the merchandise van near the Fillmore West. But basicially, I just tried spread the word and help promote their shows.

Toe Jam Presents...
Before the name 'Michigan Mike Presents' was used, I booked acts under the name "Toe Jam Presents". Acts such as Skin, Blackdog and The Mountain Music Project were booked at venues such as Tulagi’s, The West End Tavern, Outback Saloon, La Iguana, K’s China, Wilderness Pub (at Rockies Brewery). There are still a few posters around from back then.

The First Foot Stompin’ Mountain Movin’ Music Festival
Mike Henry's old house on Cold Springs Drive; Nederland, CO - April 15, 1995
The backyard/garage party where the phrase 'Michigan Mike Presents...' was first used. It actually read: "Ashleigh, Henry and Michigan Mike Presents..." The two other names were eventually dropped after I moved out to Caribou Road. Kegs of beer and a tarp extending off the garage enabled a really good time for Nederland locals to jam out.

The 2nd thru 4th Non-Annual Foot Stompin’ Mountain Movin’ Music Festivals
1632 Caribou Road; Nederland, CO - August thru September 1995
Backyard parties, complete with kegs and a covered stage at my (no heat-no water) cabin up Caribou Rd. These multi-band events featured artists such as Blackdog, FE’, Mountain Music Project, On Air, Skin, Soul Tractor and more. Very small-time. No budget and no cover charge. Very chill.

Top of The Square
Nederland, CO - Oct. 1995 thru Aug. 1997
Music Bookings, Promotions, Whatever, etc…
Because it was more a sleepy town at the time, there was not a lot happening in the bars for people my age when I moved to Ned. The PI and the Assay Office hosted some hard-rock and blues bands now and then, but that was about it. The place for GenXers was called Top of the Square, which, except for a weekly open-mic rarely hosted live music. But alas, backyard festival season had just ended and so I convinced the club's owners to let me bring in a band once a week. A quick and significant increase in business convinced them to knock down walls and convert from an intimate, little four-dining room restaurant/bar into one big party area. It was a huge hit and by July of '96 I was booking five nights of music a week there! By August '97 I had booked more than 300 nights of music at The Top! It was THE CLUB... even if you lived in Boulder. (Because Boulder had absolutely nothing going on at that time either... every thing there had just converted to pool halls.) People were coming out in droves for the live tunes. Other businesses in Ned saw this reaction and started booking live bands also... and hence the 90's Nederland music scene began to bloom. Booking and networking at The Top led to the creation of 'Nederland Acid Jazz' (below) and 'Bluegrass Wednesday' (below). A great many bands got their start at The Top, while others were already big names. Bands included Charles Sawtelle & Whippets, Tony Furtado, Wendy Woo Band, Zukes Of Zydeco, Zambeeland Orchestra, Skin, Fe’, Chief Broom, Roots Revolt, Foxtrot Zulu, Fat Mama, Sherri Jackson Band, Hypnotic Clambake, Magraw Gap, Ben Stevens, Blackdog, Floodplain Gang, Bruce Hayes, Mark Diamond, Motor Bootie, Tribal Folk, PSOAS, Odd Men Out, Wiley Cotton Band, Catawampus Universe, Dexter Grove, Chitlin, Johnny O. Stage Stop Inn
Rollinsville, CO - Late 1995 thru Early 1996

New Years Eve 1996 with Skin and Friends was a big event and also was my first show with presale tickets. It sold out in a major blizzard! Other acts inculded Blackdog, The Buzz Harvest, Chocolate Cow, Disarray, Furious Howard Brown, Mountain Music Project, On Air and Schwagg.

Overland Stage Stop Brewery
Longmont, CO - Feb. 1996 thru July 1998
General music bookings and promoting, sound and lighting, consultation, etc…
Convinced the town’s first brewpub that music would help business shortly after they opened. They became Longmont’s hot music spot. Their business has flourished and they were voted best place to see live music in a local Longmont newspaper’s Readers Poll. Over 250 bookings. Many of the bands listed for Top of The Square also played here. (NOTE TO SELF: List the Bands!)

1996 Colorado Freedom Festival
Boulder Bandshell; Downtown Boulder, CO - Friday thru Sunday, June 28th thru 30th, 1996
Over fifty bands and artists played the two stages of this successful three day outdoor Friday through Sunday event. Organized all aspects of music and beer for the festival located in the heart of Boulder, including the application of park and alcohol permits, finding a beer sponsor for funding (Left Hand Brewing Company), hiring of sound engineers and EPO (Boulder Sound-cop), getting additional alcohol insurance, performance scheduling and band bookings, MC and stage announcing, recruiting of staff and volunteers, printing staff shirts, site direction, stage and fencing, etc… It was an epic event for downtown Boulder and The City Of Boulder was extremely pleased with the result. The event featured Charles Sawtelle, Tony Furtado, Sponge Kingdom, Chief Broom, Skin, Sally VanMeter, Fe', Zestfinger, Magraw Gap, Adrian Romero and Love Supreme, Brethren Fast, Available Jones, The Wendy Woo Band, Soul Tractor, Double Dose, Legba, Wiley Cotton Band, Blackdog, Aquarium Voodoo, Tribal Folk, Mountain Music Project, The Buzz Harvest, Libby Kirkpatrick, Chuck Grossman, Acoustic Food Chain, JoAnne DelCarpine & Mauricio Caparelli, Brainbone (w/ Drew Moore), Bambochee, Steve Ray Liedlich, Chocolate Cow, Butlers and Thieves, Chip and the Chowderheads, Tribe Of Butterflies, Blackhorse Sleeping, Still Lookin', Mkono, Rom Rayman, Mangore Classical Guitar Duo, John Randall, Patrick Latella, Mitch Alden and many more...

The improvisational session that started it all featured Dave Watts (Drums - Skin/Shockra), Ross Martin (Guitar - Tony Furtado Band/Nina Story), Aaron Holstein (Guitar - Boogie Shoes), Edwin Hurwitz (Bass - Skin/Shockra) and Ian Duncan (Sax - MST/Phat Vibe). The weekly session of rotating musicians every Monday quickly became the hottest thing to see and hear in town. Nederland Acid Jazz is credited with having a substantial impact on Nederland’s music scene, and perhaps on the Boulder music scene also. A live compilation CD is ‘in the works’. Click the NAJ link for more info!
